The caged bird sings a sad song

It’s not short and not too long

But it’s just enough that no one else will sing along

Wake me up before you go

I’ll tell you everything that you want to know

I’m passing out and wasted

The freedom that I tasted was so sweet

I’m nothing more than blood and bones

But I’m happiest when running home to tell you

The first light came and I changed

You leaned outside and called my name

But nothing of what we once were remains the same

I’m going on a journey, all alone

So go ahead and try and hurt me, all alone

The certainty that surged through me when I heard the breeze

You can’t clip my wings or make me sing

I’ll break this cage and fly away

My only carriage carries me

I left a distant memory

The open sky I’m home at last

The shadows that I overcast

Will cover all I left behind

My only limit now is time

And you can’t touch me
