You lead the lost sheep up to the mountain

You tell them everything’s gonna be OK

With that old familiar smile that everybody’s seen

There’s a million or more if you’re counting

And they’re waiting for words but you’ve nothing to say

It’s that old familiar sting where everybody’s clean

You start mumbling, they’re applauding, everyone’s screaming your name

There’s a rumbling while you’re lording it, everyone’s watching your game

There’s little now to be said for this

Oh you know we’ve done all we can

So everyone’s waiting for an audience with the man

We’ve gone from Shakespeare, Dickens and Churchill

We’ve had Nixon, Napoleon, Kennedy too

They all had that old familiar smile that everybody knows

How the West was won is a legend

But how the Empire fell is known only to the few

It’s like that old rodeo where anything goes

It’s a night-out but a wipe-out 'cause Mary’s gone mislaid the sheep

You’re still talking but only to the walking, dead 'cause they’ve all gone

asleep

There’s little now to be said for this, oh you know we’ve done all we can

Pa talks like it’s politics, claims: ('The Pope’s a friend of mine')

Ma’s in the chapel preaching fear of the Lord while junior’s committing a crime

So everything is fine

You go for a night-out, it’s a regular wipe-out 'cause Mary’s gone lost the

sheep

You, you’re still talking but only to the walking, dead 'cause they’ve all gone

asleep
