Yesterday I walked the pier,

I watched the tide retreat.

For far too long I gazed out

Trying not to admit defeat

To different times on other shores,

Knowing nothing of worth could be mine that was yours.

Only a shadow of the good remains,

All that’s left is this lingering pain

Like a seaside resort out of season

I stand all alone with no reason.

Today I sit under the shade

Of a broken structure wrecked with age.

At the far end of a beach

Where present time will never reach

Knowing nothing is gonna take us back,

We’re on the wrong side of the track.

Tomorrow I’ll go to the city,
