Oh, God, you are a tricky one,

Like the fouls on rolling sea.

Got a whole lot of hanger behind my tongue,

And I’m saving it all for thee.

What’s the good of this world that you brought me to

If you fill up my eyes with tears?

When I’m death to the birds and your trembling words,

For the curses that fill my ears.

And Lord, you made me travel,

‘till my boots swore throughout the hills.

But to shake his love must I truly lie

And be broken upon Your will.

I will run all down like a thunder cloud

All full of light and of rain.

But when it’s spent, each increment comes back to me again.

And God, you know the heart of me

It’s built from solid stuff.

I may seem to crumble like the sun,

But like glass, I break and I cut.

And a thousand pieces of my heart,

That will all tread down in the dirt

They may rise up like a bird and fly

But they never can shake this earth.

And God, you are a tricky one,

Like the salt sea in my ears.

And when I die, if I come to You,

There’ll be questions in my tears.

What’s the good of this world that you brought me to

In the good and the man is so afraid,

Nobody will ever love again

When they know what love entails.
