John Dunn was the bully of the Robinson School,\ntwice the size of me and Jimmy West.\nThe whole 3rd Grade feared him, tried hard to avoid him\nbut he liked to pick on little guys the best.\nThe Mule Days belt buckle that my daddy’d won and gave me\nwas well-admired by every boy in town.\nJohn Dunn the Bully, his dark eyes shined upon it,\nhe said he guessed he’d have it for his own.\nNow, little Jimmy West, he didn’t have a father\nand my folks treated him like family.\nHe said he’d be a monkey’s uncle before John Dunn took my buckle\nand word spread like fire up a tree.\nIt was Davey and Goliath in the Robinson yard.\nThe entire school was gathered in the round.\nJohn swung and missed Jimmy, Jimmy got a left in\nand when he broke John’s nose the whole world heard the sound.\nWe knew Jimmy’d won when the bully hit the ground.\nBoth boys were suspended and my mother told me later\nthat the teachers all were glad that John got beat.\nBut he always shook his fist at me, well into adulthood,\nbut he never came within a hundred feet.\nMy dad’s no longer with us but I still wear that belt buckle\nand I long ago lost track of Jimmy West.\nBut I bet he’s breaking noses of all the big bad bullies\nthat like to pick on little guys the best.\nMore than ever this world needs Jimmy West.\nIt was Davey and Goliath in the Robinson yard.\nThe entire school was gathered in the round.\nJohn swung and missed Jimmy, Jimmy got a left in\nand when he broke John’s nose the whole world heard the sound.\nWe knew Jimmy’d won when the bully hit the ground.\nWe knew we all had won when the bully hit the ground.
